The method involves forming a polarizing layer structure (30) on a temporary support (31), on which an intermediate coating layer (32) is placed, where the polarizing layer structure comprises an orientation layer (34) and a polarizing layer (35) with dichroic colorant. The polarizing layer structure is removed from the temporary support for obtaining the structure in the form of a self-supported membrane. The polarizing layer structure is applied on a surface of a base optical element e.g. ophthalmic lens. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a polarizing layer structure comprising an orientation layer (2) an optical polarizing element comprising a polarizing layer structure.
