The method involves generating engagement criteria relative to a flight parameter and based on a follow-up aircraft, and determining an effective value of the parameter in the follow-up aircraft. A magnitude depending on the determined effective value is compared with the criteria by a comparison unit (4), and an indicator indicating a conformity of the magnitude with the criteria is formed, where the indication provides information on the possibility of the engagement of an automatic piloting unit. The indicator is presented in the form of graphics on a display screen (11) of the aircraft.
