The method involves recording a signal of a sensor (12) e.g. ultrasonic sensor, to measure distance between an obstacle and the sensor that is mounted in a lateral wall (13) of a cavity (10) of a domestic microwave oven. The recorded signal is analyzed on a time period. Operating anomaly of the oven are detected from analysis result. A no-load operation of the oven is detected if the recorded signal is constant and equal to a value corresponding to distance of the sensor to the wall. The blocking of a dish on a rotating plate (11) is detected if the recorded signal has a variable profile.
