Determination of the concentration of hydrocarbons in samples e.g. water, comprises extracting the hydrocarbons from the sample with a solvent, and quantitatively measuring the hydrocarbons by infrared or near-infrared absorption
Determination of the concentration of hydrocarbons in samples e.g. water and earth samples comprises: extracting the hydrocarbons, preferably cycloalkanes or their derivatives without methyl group, from the sample with a solvent; and quantitatively measuring the extracted hydrocarbons in the solvent by infrared (IR)- or near infrared (NIR)- absorption in the wave number range of 400 cm-1 to 13000 cm-1, where the methyl group is absorbed by the IR- or NIR-radiation, and the solvent exhibits no- or weak absorption.
