Light emitting device, especially a light emitting device for traffic signals, constructed with luminescent diodes (= LEDs) (30), which has the following characteristics: (a) the light emitting device has at least one plate (102 ) in which a large number of LEDs (30) are connected in series, (b) the LED board (102) can be connected, without voltage conversion and without pulse modulation, essentially to a mains voltage (103) of at least 110V, (c) the LED board can be connected to the mains voltage through a current limiting device (106), (d) a device (R4, D, T1) is provided to suppress the final luminescence of the LEDs.
