Modulation of substrate preference by selective translocation of the major cardiac glucose transporter Glut4

This invention is in the field of molecular medicine and provides new leads for anti-diabetic therapies. More in particular it relates to a method for specifically increasing glucose uptake in a muscle cell wherein a stimulus is provided to said muscle cell upon which stimulus the major cardiac glucose transporter GLUT4 is translocated from the GLUT4 storage compartment directly to the sarcolemma, thereby by-passing the insulin-responsive recycling endosomes, wherein said stimulus does not alter the uptake of long-chain fatty acids in said muscle cell.
