The invention relates to a method of characterising the cellular tropism of Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) viruses, i.e. the capacity of HIV-1 viruses to use the CXCR4 and/or CCR5 receptors for cell entry. The invention also relates to a method of assessing susceptibility or resistance of HIV-1 viruses to entry inhibitors, in particular those targeting HIV-1 co-receptors.
