A method for preventing loss of a flash memory and the flash memory having a loss prevention function are provided to execute a loss reporting function if a preset ID and password are not received from a user when the flash memory is automatically executed in a plug-and-play mode by storing the ID, the password, user information, and a guide message in the flash memory. A flash memory comprises a CD-ROM area, a hidden area storing an ID, a password, user information, and a loss prevention program, and a data area storing data. The loss prevention program guides ID/password input to a user when a plug-and-play function is executed(S104). The loss prevention program determines whether the data area is a prohibited state when the ID and the password are not received for a predetermined time(S118). The loss prevention program displays the user information read from the hidden area when the data area is the prohibited state, and prohibits the data area and displays the user information read from the hidden area when the data area is not in the prohibited state(S120).
