A distance measuring sensor built with relatively simple structure at low cost, a robot equipped with the distance measuring sensor and a method of driving the robot are provided to measure very short distance between a light source and a target surface, and to accurately determine the place at where height is changed. A distance measuring sensor includes a light source(110) apart from a target surface with an angle, a camera unit(120) taking images of the target surface containing a point created by the light source, a point position calculating unit extracting and outputting position information on the point on the image taken by the camera unit, a distance table describing distance corresponding to the position information, and a distance calculation unit calculating and outputting the distance between the light source and the target surface by looking up the distance table corresponding to the position calculated by the point position calculating unit.
