The method involves feeding dried and ground coal with combustion air by the dust burner of a boiler. A prognosis for the emission of oxides of nitrogen of the steam generator is developed on the basis of a knowledge-based computer model. A control of the combustion air supply takes place depending on the prognosticated emission of oxides of nitrogen as an adjustment variable. A fixed position is held to oxides of nitrogen threshold and the combustion is carried out.
