The method involves digitizing an original image (PB) line by line and column by column into a number of pixels (P) by an image sensor e.g. video camera. The pixels are assigned to grey values of the original image, and detection and classification of objects and components of the original image are implemented by using an evaluation algorithm. A variance image and an integral image assigned to the pixels are computed from image data without intermediate storage during the reading of the image sensor. An independent claim is also included for a camera-based evaluation system with a device for arrangement in a motor vehicle and for detection and/or classification of vehicles, road signs, articles and/or persons.
