The method involves manually up-shifting and down-shifting gears of an automatic gearbox (4) in a manual mode (M) by selection devices (1, 2). Control units of the gearbox are controlled depending on signals of the selection devices and input signals by using an electronic control device (3). The down-shifting of the gears is made in the gearbox during actuation and initial holding of the selection devices in a rear shift position. The down-shifting of the gears is performed in the gearbox when maximum tolerable driving motor speed does not exceed for the down-shifting in the gearbox. An independent claim is also included for a device for controlling an automatic gearbox in a motor vehicle.
