The method involves noting a distance between a rear axle (5) of a towing vehicle (2) and a coupling element (7), which serves for coupling of a trailer coupling of a trailer (3). Distance between the rear axle of the towing vehicle and a trailer axle (4) is determined using a wheel speed gauge of a wheel of the towing vehicle. The noted distance between the rear axle and the coupling element is deducted from the determined distance in order to maintain the distance between the trailer coupling and the trailer axle. An independent claim is also included for a method for automatic measurement of distance between a trailer coupling of a trailer and a trailer axle of the trailer, which is attached to a towing vehicle.
