The method involves computing an actual changing rate of a gas torque and an estimated changing rate of the gas torque of individual cylinders of an internal combustion engine. Misfire of the internal combustion engine is opened by comparing the actual changing rate and the estimated changing rate of the gas torque of the individual cylinders. The computation of the actual changing rate of the gas torque takes place based on a physical model and the computation of the estimated changing rate of the gas torque takes place based on a signal model. An independent claim is also included for a device for detecting misfire of an internal combustion engine.
