The engine has a device to record operational data for individual assemblies of a marine diesel engine during operation of the engine. The device determines assembly specific influencing factors from the recorded operational data of the engine. Assembly specific service intervals are generated for the respective assembly of the engine based on the determination of the influencing factors. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a marine diesel engine.
