The device has a contactless sensor system (40) detecting rotating angle of a steering system (10) and outputting a rotating angle signal to a controller (46). Another sensor system (52) is provided for outputting another rotating angle signal of the rotating angle to the controller. A processor unit (50) e.g. microprocessor, of the controller determines the rotating angle based on the former angle signal or the latter angle signal. A comparator (60) tests the former angle signal based on the latter angle signal or tests the latter angle signal based on the former signal at plausibility. An independent claim is also included for a method for redundant detection of a rotating angle of a steering system for a motor vehicle.
