The method involves providing parameter sets describing requirements to a programmable and movable device, where the sets characterize static, dynamic and qualitative requirements to the device and contain kinematics parameters. The device is designed by automatic selection of modules e.g. drive unit, stored in a module library (17). The modules are positioned relative to each other by connecting links e.g. connecting bracket, in an area such that the sets are satisfied. A construction plan required for producing the links and the sets required for controlling the device are produced. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a system for performing a programmable and movable device designing method (2) a device that is manufactured using a programmable and movable device designing method, comprising a support structure.
