The method involves interrupting an air supply to a cathode (K) of a fuel cell system, during changeover to a mode of reduced power output, and reducing an electric voltage of a fuel cell stack (BS) by using a current pulse. The electric voltage of the stack is regulated by an adjustable electrical load (KP) in such a manner that the load is present within a working area limited by an upper and a lower voltage limiting value. The regulation of the electrical voltage of the stack is performed by a direct current (DC)-DC-converter.
