The method involves assigning a participant address from a limited address pool to all participants. The newly added participants are recursively monitored by an existing bus system for a defined time before a transmit access to a bus with an actual participant address of bus traffic. An own participant address is automatically changed according to a preset pattern during detection of the own participant address in the bus traffic by the participant. A participant address of a newly added participant is changed around a predefined offset.
