The detector i.e. rotary potentiometer (3), has a closed, circular potentiometer resistor (4) to produce a signal for disconnection of a drive e.g. door drive, during traversing of connections that are arranged at predetermined rotation angle points (6, 8) by a potentiometer sliding contact (10). Switches (7, 9) are provided to the respective points at an angle in the range of 0 to 180 degrees. Connections (15, 17) are assigned to the points at an angle in the range 90 to 270 degrees. The switches are formed to allow alternate measurement of a voltage over the respective points. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling movable elements such as drive shafts, of a door drive and other drives.
