The method involves passing a working medium i.e. oil, through a retarder during a braking operation, and dissipating heat produced during braking by a cooling medium of a cooling system. Flow energy accumulated in the working medium during the barking is used to increase a flow rate of the working medium in a working circuit (102) and/or the cooling medium in a cooling circuit (16). Flow of the working medium is used for driving a pump (203) and for charging a pressure accumulator. Energy stored in the pressure accumulator is used for driving a motor vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a braking system comprising a retarder and a working circuit.
