The method involves producing a binary edge image from a gray level image (38) in such a manner that a present edge is determined as an edge move area in the gray level image. An average value of the gray level of the gray level image is measured in all areas, which correspond to the edge move area of the binary edge image. The average value represents a threshold value for producing the gray level image. An independent claim is also included for an image acquisition device including a computer system with a computer program including a software code for executing a method for binarising a digital gray level image.
