The method involves applying a two-dimensional smoothing filter on a layer image (B) in an initial process step. An edge detection filter is applied to a smoothed layer image in another process step. The smoothed layer image indicates an averaging filter as smoothing filter, which computes an arithmetic average value relative to a filter core and assigns a smoothed image point as a tonal value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a reworking module for reworking of a digital medical layer image (2) an imaging device for producing a medical layer image, particularly a computer tomograph.
