The system (14) has a plate (16) to be supported on a floor (12), and a positioning arm (20) for attachment to a metal detector (10). The positioning arm has a group of projection/recessed positioning elements (24), which are complementary to each other. The plate has a group of another projection/recessed positioning elements. The positioning elements of the plate are complementary to the positioning elements of the positioning arm, where the projection/recessed positioning elements include holes or pins. An independent claim is also included for a method for positioning a manually movable metal detector during the localization and identification of metallic articles in the floor.
