The sensor has an anode (150) and a cathode (140) arranged in or at an ion-conductive solid electrolyte (110). A pair of layers (156, 157) is separated from each other by an exhaust gas. The layer covering the anode has a diffusion coefficient for fat gas molecules higher than the diffusion coefficient for oxygen molecule of the layer covering/overlapping the cathode. The cathode and the anode are arranged on the solid electrolyte to form a sensor element. A hollow space is arranged between the cathode and a layer covering the cathode. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating a gas sensor (2) a computer program product with program code for performing a method for operating a gas sensor.
