The spectrometer (4) has a unit for ionizing a sample in an inductively coupled plasma and a unit for guiding ions through a transfer lens unit (8) with a pulsed deflector. A control unit operates the pulsed deflector for redirecting the ions with a pulse width of 1 kilohertz and of 30 to 50 nano seconds in a direction to a source slot (9) such that the ions are guided to a primary ion analyzer e.g. time-of-flight analyzer (12). An independent claim is also included for a method of simultaneously measuring an isotope ratio of a unit and a primary composition in a sample.
