The method involves receiving a set of search criteria, and normalizing the set of search criteria according to a vocabulary. A search of electronic medical data is executed based on each of the search criteria to create a pool of potential study participants. The pool of potential study participants is output. A user is allowed to select the set of search criteria from a list of allowable criteria. The pool of potential study participants is invited to participate in a clinical study, where the pool of potential study participants is a de-identified pool of potential study participants. An independent claim is also included for a system for identifying a pool of potential study participants.
