The system has a lane change detector for determining whether there is another lane (SP2) in the same direction of travel adjacent to the lane (SP1) currently occupied by the vehicle, a vehicle detector for detecting other vehicles on the further lane and a decision device for deciding about the outputting of a lane change signal to the driver taking into account detection results. Independent claims are also included for the following: (A) a driver assistance system (B) a computer program product for an inventive system (C) and a method of operating an inventive system.
