The method involves determining and evaluating data representing characteristics of an object (2-4) e.g. nut, by a position-resolved quantitative and/or qualitative analysis in a real time. A position-resolved spectral image (13) is generated from an object region to be measured. The spectral image is subjected optically to a position-resolved spectral masking before the evaluation of the spectral image such that significant position-resolved spectral value and/or spectral region are filtered. The spectral value and/or spectral region are optically compressed to a readable data image. An independent claim is also included for a device for identifying characteristics of an object.
