The system has a catalytic converter arranged in an additional exhaust pipe of a diesel engine. An additional fuel injector e.g. solenoid valve, provides additional fuel, utilized for the engine, towards the pipe. An electronic control unit controls a catalyst e.g. nitrogen oxide storage diminishing catalyst, and in which a lower target admission air volume is established for sulphur poisoning recovery control with respect to a target admission air volume, which is established for catalyst regeneration control for particulate matters. An independent claim is also included for a method for purifying an exhaust gas for an internal combustion engine.
