The apparatus (10) has an actuating unit occupying an unlocking position during normal progression of a user in ascending or descending directions, or a locking position during falling of the user. The unit has movable self-locking holding units (30a, 30b) assembled in opposition with respect to a guiding passage (27) with U-shaped rectilinear slides (28a, 28b), where the units (30a, 30b) are locked in unrolling and rolling directions of a sling, respectively. Hooking points are arranged in top and bottom of the sling when hooking loops ascend and descend, and vice-versa, respectively. An independent claim is also included for a belaying installation comprising a fall-arrest apparatus.
