The method involves coding a part of an image and a target definition comprised between definitions of a lower definition layer and a upper definition layer, along a format comprising the layers. A physical quantity is evaluated for coding modes of the part of the image in the upper definition layer based on the target definition. One of the coding modes of the upper definition layer is selected based on the evaluation, and the upper definition layer is encoded by implementing the selected coding mode for the part of the image. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for coding a digital image (2) a computer program comprising instructions for implementing a digital image coding method (3) a information medium comprising instructions of a computing program.
