The installation (10) has a sealed enclosure (12) with a platform (14) that is permeable to water vapor and on which waste layer (100) rests, where the platform is formed of a metallic rail. A conduit (16) injects the vapor into the enclosure, and a temperature sensor (18) detects temperature of the waste resting on the platform. The platform contacts with a wall of the enclosure over its periphery to define, in the enclosure on both sides of the platform, a lower space in which the vapor is injected, and an upper space in which the vapor arrives after passage of the vapor via the platform. An independent claim is also included for a method for disinfecting cooling tower waste.
