The method involves generating configuration data in a configuration data memory (7) parallel to a data configuration memory (5) by a computer (6) with a graphical user interface (11), where the later memory is organized as a data base. Contents of the former data configuration memory is substituted to contents of the latter data configuration memory by a private automatic branch exchange (PABX) (1) and a processor (4) using a substitution module (12). Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for configuring an automatic switchboard of a telephone network (2) two private automatic branch exchange (PABXs) system.
