The device (10) has a set of vertical separators (12) supporting a maintaining profile (14) extending horizontally and at a distance above a shelf (E), where each separator is formed in the form of a plate. The separator has a lower edge (16) resting on the shelf, and a rear edge (18) including a through opening (20) to constitute a detent unit that co-operates with the maintaining profile. Each of the separators is arranged in a chosen position along the profile for defining compartments (C1-Cn) with variable width. The lower edge has a friction stop made of rubber.
