The method involves simulating the capabilities of a decoder (8) to identify a selected prediction function from a residue and finite set of prediction function, where the residue represents the difference between an common descriptor e.g. information relative to pixels such as brightness, of a common image portion and a predicted descriptor obtained by an application. A requirement for coding an identifier of the selected prediction function is determined according to the simulating step.
