Luminescent nanoparticles for use as a diagnostic agent for optical imaging in vivo, which emit light of wavelength 400-1300 nm for at least 0.01 second after excitation with light of wavelength 100-800 nm or with x-rays, comprise an aluminate-type compound that comprises a metal oxide and is doped with a rare earth metal ions and optionally transition metal ions.
