The method involves illuminating a body zone (6) using light beams emitted between two wavelengths at different spectral components. Luminance reflected by the zone is measured in each of the zones by a camera type luminance detection device (3). The reflected luminance is analyzed based on the wavelengths by comparing the luminance measured for each illuminated zone. The luminance ratio is formed, and a living or non living character of the body zone is determined based on the difference between the ratio of the luminance and a ratio predicted by a reflectance model. An independent claim is also included for a biometric capture optical device for implementing a method for determining a living character of a body zone, comprising a camera type luminance detecting device.
