The system has a pressure sensor (38) determining differential pressure at terminals of a particle filter (23) at start of a regeneration phase, and a temperature sensor (36) determining the temperature in the downstream of the filter during the phase. A determination unit determines the mass of eliminated particles based on a set point temperature and the temperature. A comparison unit compares the mass of particles at the start of phase determined by a determination unit and the mass of eliminated particles during the phase to determine the mass of particles remaining within the filter. An independent claim is also included for a method for estimating the mass of particles retained in a particle filter mounted on an exhaust line of an internal combustion engine.
