PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image coding method and an image decoding method etc. which can restore an image correctly even if part of memory management information is lost by a transmission channel error, and to provide an image coding method and an image decoding method etc. which select a candidate of a reference image that can be referred to more appropriately, and improves coding efficiency.;SOLUTION: The image coding method includes: a step of executing coding of an image (Step 100); a step of deciding whether an unnecessary memory exists (Step 102); a step of coding memory management information for releasing the unnecessary memory when the unnecessary memory exists (Step 103); a step of releasing the unnecessary memory (Step 104); a step of deciding whether the memory management information that releases the unnecessary memory is coded by coding of an image immediately before (Step 105); and a step of coding again the memory management information that releases the unnecessary memory when the memory management information is coded (Step 106).;COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
