PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an efficient surface treatment method for metal oxide particles excellent in dispersibility and dispersion stability. PSOLUTION: An organic silicon compound expressed by general formula (1) is added to hydrolyze in a dispersion liquid of metal oxide particles in water and/or an organic solvent, to which, subsequently, an organic silicon compound expressed by formula (2) is added to hydrolyze. The formulae are: (1):(NHSB2/SB-CSBn/SBHSB2n/SB-Z-CSBm/SBHSB2m/SB)SBL/SB-Si-YSB4-L/SB, wherein Z represents -NH or -CHSB2/SB, Y represents a 1-4C alkoxy group, a hydroxyl group, halogen or hydrogen, L represents an integer of 1 to 3, n represents an integer of 0 to 10 and m represents an integer of 0 to 10; and (2):RSBp/SB-SiXSB4-p/SB, wherein R represents a 1-10C substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon group and may be identical or different from each other, X represents a 1-4C alkoxy group, a hydroxyl group, halogen or hydrogen, and p represents an integer of 1 to 3, however, the formula excludes an amino group-substituted hydrocarbon group.
