PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a vapor-grown carbon fiber, which produces a vapor-grown carbon fiber having a small fiber diameter and a narrow fiber diameter distribution in a high yield than conventional ones and to obtain a vapor-grown carbon fiber.;SOLUTION: In the method for producing a vapor-grown carbon fiber by bringing a carbon-containing gas into contact with a catalyst, a catalyst obtained by coprecipitating a carrier, an active metal species and a promoter by using oxalic acid is used as the catalyst. Iron, nickel or cobalt is used as the active metal seed. The vapor-grown carbon fiber is produced by the production method and has a fiber diameter of 5-50 nm.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
