PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a vapor-grown carbon fiber, which produces a vapor-grown carbon fiber having a small fiber diameter and a narrow fiber diameter distribution in a high yield than conventional ones and to obtain a vapor-grown carbon fiber.;SOLUTION: In the method for producing a vapor-grown carbon fiber by bringing a carbon-containing gas into contact with a catalyst, a catalyst obtained by coprecipitating a carrier, an active metal species and a promoter by using oxalic acid is used as the catalyst.
