PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical propagation characteristic controller which improves image quality by extending a luminance dynamic range and the number of gray scales, and is suitable to reduce a table size and a generation time. PSOLUTION: A projection type display device 100 temporarily determines transmissivity T2 of each pixel of a color modulation light valve based upon HDR display data, determines transmissivity T1 of each pixel of a luminance modulation light valve based upon the temporarily determined transmissivity T2 and HDR display data, and determines a control value of each pixel of the luminance modulation light valve based upon the determined transmissivity T1. Based upon the determined transmissivity T1 and HDR display data, transmissivity T2 of each pixel of the color modulation light valve is determined and based upon the determined transmissivity T2, a control value of each pixel of the color modulation light valve is determined.
