The Multimode interference coupler according to the invention has two opposing sidewalls (202) with inwardly tapered towards the right end (202) and these walls define the width of the multimode region (W1) along the propagation axis of the device. The inward taper causes the average width of the device to be reduced in comparison to conventional MMI couplers having straight sidewalls (101). Further, the invention allows the two input access waveguides (203) positioned along the propagation axis and the two out put waveguides (204) positioned with respect to the propagation axis at an angle equal to tapered angle which is defined as where, L= coupling length of MMI region.
