Navigation system for disabled persons, in particular visually impaired persons

A navigation system for disabled persons, in particular visually impaired persons, is disclosed. The system includes: a number of transponders with RFID tags installed at known locations, with each of the RFID tags having a unique identifier; a database including a mapping of the unique identifiers to the known locations; and a portable device having a transceiver for communication with at least one proximate transponder, a storage means for storing content of the database, a processing means for determining a known location in accordance with the mapping of the unique identifier of the proximate transponder and for determining information relating to the known location using the database, and an interface for providing the information. The transponders include animal identification RFID tags that have been recovered after prior use in an animal.
