The device (1) has sensing units (9, 9') made of material corresponding to corrosion characteristics of a steel reinforcement (2). The sensing units are wound around a housing (8) in a wire-like manner, are arranged on an outer side of a wall (8) of the housing of a sensor (4) and are spaced from each other. The sensing units possess different distances from the reinforcement so that temporal characteristics of corrosion proceeding towards the steel reinforcement are determined by an external evaluation device (5) e.g. measuring station. The sensor is made of plastic. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a measuring device.
