Modeling is carried out over a series of intervals of geological time. For each interval, deterministic equations are applied. They model means of transport processes taking place continuously: over the long term, and over the short term. Transport processes acting in a catastrophic manner in the very short term are also modeled. Basin stratigraphy is determined from the results, taking conservation of mass into account. At each interval, for each lithography, long term sedimentary flows carried by water are modeled, taking into account a further model of water flow distribution over the basin, and the sediment transport capacity of such flows. Short-term water-carried sedimentary flows are modeled using an exponential model assessing water velocity. Catastrophic, water-carried flows of sediment are modeled in unstable zones, which are located using a critical inclination criterion. A series of general mathematical equations is provided, to enable modeling of the long-term and short-term flows.
