A method for producing a functional egg, and a functional egg produced by the method are provided to lower the level of cholesterol, to increase the level of calcium and to reduce the amount of additives. A method for producing a functional egg comprises the step of administrating a mineral extract of diatomite to laying hens to produce a functional egg having a cholesterol content of 1.2 mg/100 g or less and a calcium content of 346.81 mg/100 g or more. Preferably the mineral extract of diatomite is administrated by mixing it with feed or drinking water.
