A method for optimizing a step length for multi axis milling process based on a mechanical operating characteristic is provided to maximize processing performance by measuring the characteristics of a processing path and a mechanical tool including various controllers. A characteristic data base and a limit value according to a progressing angle which is a ratio of the radius of curvature and the step length are measured. A continuous interval among numerical control data provided from a cam system is determined. A step curve about the determined continuous interval is generated. The optimum numerical control data is regenerated based on a resistance value of a characteristic data base of a processing device.
