PURPOSE: An automatic answering apparatus and a method for controlling the same are provided to let people know the permanent number of the subscriber through the automatic answering apparatus, while achieving improved quality of service. CONSTITUTION: An automatic answering apparatus comprises a connector for interconnecting a subscriber terminal and a telephone line; a ring detection unit(24) for detecting the ring signal of the telephone line transmitted through the connector; a message analysis unit for inspecting the type of call signal by analyzing the call setting message between the ring signals; a sensor for periodically sensing the existence of service subscriber so as to set/release an automatic answering mode; a storing unit for storing permanent number guide voice data; a control unit(28) for setting/releasing an automatic answering mode in accordance with the sensing result of the sensor upon detection of ring signal, and controlling the automatic answering mode by setting the value of automatic answering timer in accordance with the type of call signal analyzed by the message analysis unit; a switching unit for producing an automatic answering path by controlling the connector in accordance with the control of the control unit when an automatic answering mode is set; and a voice guide unit for transmitting the permanent number guide voice data to the calling party through the automatic answering path in accordance with the control of the control unit when an automatic answering mode is set.
